The very first Ore Cart of the nine planned installations is located in Mammoth. Founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1960, the town is located in the San Pedro River Valley within ten miles of Oracle and San Manuel - the tri-communities of southeastern Pinal County. In 1883 Frank Schultz located the first mine in the Mammoth district. It turned out that it wasn't possible to work the ores at that site so a stamp mill for that purpose was built along the San Pedro River and named Mammoth. In 1885, the Mammoth mine changed hands and work stopped when a new system of milling was introduced. Soon after mining for gold ceased in the area. Mining returned in 1936 when molybdenum production began. Click here for more history
